BlackBetty Grounding Kit Install
A grounding kit basically does just that, it improves the grounding on your vehicles electronic system. There are some benefits to be had, and in these days of ECU’s and ICE (In-Car-Electronics) it makes sense that improving on the grounds will help optimize these systems. Here’s a simple how-to on installing a kit from one of the premiere suppliers of grounding kits for the G.
Tools required:
The grounding kit, we used the 8 AWG kit here.
10mm Socket wrench
5mm Allen wrench
Obligatory kit photos:
- Several wires - a long one, two short ones, and another that splits and terminates into a 4 AWG ring terminal on one end, and spade terminals on the other <— this would be the throttle body grounding wires.
- Several zip ties
Steps:
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Please note that by doing so, this will reset your favorite stations list, possibly the memory seats and the one-touch up/down window controls. You can refer to your manual for setting your favorites up, along with the memory seats. For the window, with the car turned on, push down the driver side window button and keep it pressed for 20 seconds after it’s fully-down. Then pull it up, keeping it again for 20 seconds after it has closed. Do the same for all the other window buttons.

- Take off the engine cover. There are 3 bolts and 2 nuts to loosen here.

- This is how the engine bay should look after removing the cover.

- Locate the longest wire from the kit. Connect one end to the negative battery cable you disconnected in step one.
- Route it through, and under, the plastic piece that shrouds the battery compartment. In the picture below, i lifted the areas marked upwards, this helps ease the routing of the cable(s).

- Attach the end of the cable routed above to the bolt shown below. It’s located just under the vehicle identification plate on the passenger side strut tower. There is a factory grounding wire attached to this as well. Grab one of the short cables from the kit and attach it to the same bolt. (Both cables are shown below, just before they were attached).

- To the short cable added above, run the other end to the engine and attach it to the bolt shown below.

- This is how they should look after performing steps 6 & 7.

- Move over to the driver side. Grab the other short wire from the kit and attach it to this bolt, just beside the air/filter box.

- Run the other end of that wire to the bolt shown here. For ease of installation, i recommend popping off the relay box cover, shown below.

Cover removed.

- Grab the last wire from the kit, this should be the one that splits into spade terminals on a short and long wire on one end, and the 4 AWG ring terminal on the other.
- Using the shortest of the two wires, connect the spade terminal to the allen bolt on the passenger side throttle body.

- Locate the longest of the two wires, run it behind the engine (by the firewall) and attach the other end to the allen bolt on the driver side throttle body.

- Now grab the 4 AWG ring terminal and run it through and under the battery compartment shroud shown in step 5. Then attach that along with the terminal from step 4.
- Along with the terminals mentioned in step 14, attach the negative battery cable to the negative post on your battery. Tighten.
- Re-attach then engine cover.
- That’s it!
I’m a skeptic at heart, so i did this “mod” with doubt and about half a can of salt to go with it.
So, does this work? Find out here.
